This layer of our map has students mapping out items from Thomas Jefferson's foreign and domestic policy. Students will understand the importance of the Mississippi River by mapping the route western farmers took to get their crops to eastern markets. This reinforces the need for Jefferson to acquire the Louisiana Purchase, which students will map and include Lewis & Clark's route west. Last, the attack on the Chesapeake is included to display how that led to the Embargo of 1807.

While the Lewis and Clark Expedition focuses solely on the encounters of the explorers, the Story of Us: Westward takes a more global approach to put all the major events of the first half of the 1800s into perspective. It includes exploration of the Purchase, pioneers and immigrants moving west, the Texas Revolution and eventual statehood and the Mexican-American War.
