The Continental Congress met here in Philadelphia in 1776 to declare independence from Britain. Eleven years later delegates met again to strengthen the national government. After a hot summer, a brand new Constitution was written.

Use these videos as a crash course to introduce why America needed a Constitution to be written. EDpuzzle a site that allows you to select a video and customize it by editing, cropping, recording audio, and adding questions to make an engaging presentation or lesson. Divide your class in half, and let kids debate on whether or not the Constitution should have been ratified? Ask the questions, "Why were Anti-Federalists afraid of a government led by a president?" and "What's wrong with having a powerful country?"
This Slides presentation requires students to form an opinion, pick a side, and defend what they think. Students will also have to show how the Constitution intended to fix major weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation. Then, they'll have to answer four "what if" tyrannical government scenarios. |
